Dalesmen Singers Gala Night 2007

The 2007 Gala Night concert was a great success, the choir were in excellent voice under their MD Steve  and accompanist Ann. Their guest artist for the evening was Martin Neil Dunn (tenor) from Sheffield with his accompanist Vincent Billington. The audience enjoyed the rich tenor voice of Martin with his programme of popular operatic arias along with songs made  famous by Caruso and Mario Lanza. Stu Mc Farlane MBE introduced the programme and added his humour to the evening. The evening raised £1170 for the Lupus UK charity. Audrey Smith presented a cheque to the chairman of the charity. After the concert the choir, guests and audience went across to the village hall for great supper beautifully prepared by Dalesmen wifes and supporters. It was a wonderful evening enjoyed by all who attended and great to raise money for a worthwhile charity. Well done, everyone.

Garden Party

On August Bank Holiday Monday the Dalesmen Garden Party was held at the home in Goathland of Mrs Audrey Smith our President. We couldn’t have asked for a better day for weather and the venue, which is next door to the Aidensfield Arms. There was a constant stream of people who arrived by steam train and coach to partake of the cream teas. They were able to try their luck on the tombola or get a bargain from the stalls. The event raised £1141 for choir funds. The amount broke all previous records for the event. Our thanks to Audrey for the use of her home and garden and to all who helped on the day.

The Dalesmen’s Teesside Princess
cruise
on 17 th July was an enjoyable
occasion. As the boat cast off from
the Endeavor wharf at Stockton the
heavens opened. The party settled
down to an excellent meal as the boat
made its way towards Preston Park
and Yarm. When the meal was finished
the rain ceased and everyone had the
opportunity to go out on deck to enjoy
the surroundings and the wildlife. Some were treated to the dulcet tones of Jedsinging ‘Ole Man River’. On the return journey from Yarm everyone was treated to the sight of a spectacular sunset. Thanks to Jeff and Alan for arranging the trip.

Wombwell revisited: good concert - late night!
On the 5th may, the choir travelled to Womwell for a joint performance with old friends in the Wombwell choir - the Dalesmen and Womwell association goes back a long way with many friendships having been forged over the years.. It is always a good concert and this was no exception with a great tea provided when the choir arrived by coach from Danby. At 7pm the concert started and both choirs performed separately and together with some excellent solos in between.. Afterwards the choirs retired to a well known pub for a beer or two and then headed home. Late night for the Dalesmen, back in Danby at 1am!

                                                                                                           Tom Martland
We are sorry to report the death of Mr Tom Martland in April. Tom had been a loyal member of the Dalesmen for almost 25 years. During this time he has taken various roles on the committee including serving as chairman. After a memorable tour of Ontario in 2004 Tom’s health began to deteriorate. He became a life member of the choir in 2005. He was a sociable, active and valued member and will be sadly missed. The choir sang Morte Criste at his funeral on 19 th April at St Hilda’s Church, Whitby. Our sympathy goes to Shirley and his family.

Mr Music hits the big five-oh

Our illustrious leader, Steve has finally reached the big five-oh! OK, the rendering of happy birthday at the Grapes may not have been the Choir's finest hour but a good time was had by all at the surprise birthday celebration. How the committee kept the event a secret will never be known but it was a good surprise for Steve and with good food was a good evening out. Peter Wainright the Choir's very own master of odd odes, can be seen here reciting his tribute to Steve. It was pretty good and we all had a laugh - but it also reflected our appreciation for our musical director, his talents and many enjoyable events singing together in the choir.

                                    The choir in good voice!
As can be seen in the photograph below, we were in good voice for the Gala although the picture only shows a section of the choir. We sang our usual eclectic mix of songs and got a good reception helped by an enthusiastic audience and good acoustics in the Methodist chapel. Steve managed to look sauve in the white tux and as always, Ann was the perfect accompanist.

                                                                                                         Suzanna entertains!

The annual Gala concert was a sell out, helped by a fabulous performance from the well known soprano guest artiste Suzannah Clarke and the usual great supper that always follows held in Danby village hall. This event enabled the choir to raise £1327 for charity. Well done everyone - a great effort!

                       The Choir tours Catalonia:
As ususal, the Choir had a great tour abroad, this time to the Catalonian region of southern France.. Twenty five members of the choir took part with concerts with Choir Allegria in Vernet Les Bains and with Canta Canta in Perpignan . Moving on to Barcelona, we sang in the Monastery of Sant Pau del Camp. Everyone had a good time - viva the next trip abroad!
